Important Saranac 2019 Information

THE BEST WEEK OF YOUR LIFE!
We are so glad that you will be attending Asian Young Life camp. We hope that your time at Saranac will be one of the best weeks of your life. Important information will be mailed to every person registered for our Asian Young Life trip to Saranac Village. For your convenience, everything you need to know can also be found on this web page.

The camp office is open everyday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If your parents wish to speak with you or to contact the camp for any reason, please have them call the camp office at (518) 891-3010 and speak with the receptionist. You are NOT allowed to use your cell phone at camp, so please remind your parents that they should NOT call your cell phone. If you wish to call home, there are public phones at camp which you may use for free.

If your parents call the camp after hours, they will have the opportunity to leave a message on the office answering machine. In EMERGENCY situations, your parents should listen to the recorded announcement; the message will direct them to the phone number of the on-call person assigned to handle emergencies for that particular evening. A licensed medical physician and an EMT live on the camp premises and are available 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency.

RETURN INFORMATION
The bus will return to East Bergen Christian Church on Saturday, August 3. The exact return time cannot be determined until that day, but expect the bus to return around 8:30 PM. Students will be instructed to call home to let parents know approximately what time the bus will return.

CAMP POLICIES
  • Cell phones are NOT permitted at camp, but they are permitted on the bus. We realize your parents may wish to contact you on your cell phone, but please understand that the camp is remotely isolated in the Adirondack Mountains of NY State, so as a result very few cell phones actually work at camp. All cell phones will be collected on arrival at Saranac and stored in the camp safe for the duration of the week. If your parents wish to contact you, they should call the camp office at (518) 891-3010 and have you paged. If you wish to call home, there are public phones at camp which you may use for free.
  • Smart watches with LTE phone capabilities are NOT permitted at camp. If your watch can make or receive phone calls, you will not be permitted to use it at camp. Please leave it at home. But you should bring a waterproof watch so you know what time it is.
  • Electronic accessories (like Airpods, iPad, Nintendo DS, PSP, MP3 players, etc.) are NOT permitted at camp, but they are permitted on the bus. There are no locks on cabin doors, so these things can be easily stolen, thus ruining what otherwise would have been a good week for you. If you do bring electronic items like these on the bus, they will be collected on arrival at Saranac and stored in the camp safe for the duration of the week. Of course, all items will be returned to you when we depart camp. Just be sure to mark your name on each electronic item.
  • Absolutely NO alcohol, e-cigarettes/juul, hookah, or illegal drugs are permitted. If you bring any such items to camp, we will notify your parents, and they may be asked to pick you up at camp and take you home immediately.
  •
T-SHIRTS
Shirt Picture.jpgYou will be given a FREE Asian Young Life T-shirt on the bus ride up to camp. You will be required to wear your shirt on the bus and during the first evening at camp as well as for the group photo later in the week. This year's shirt is black and consists of a variety of icons and symbols associated with AYL and Asian American culture.

IMMUNIZATION RECORDS NEEDED
Every person going to Saranac MUST provide proof of vaccination immunizations. Most students and leaders already provided this information when they submitted their health form online. But some of you chose to "bring a paper copy with you" to camp instead. If your name is on the list below, you were one of these people who opted to bring a paper copy. Please make sure you do, in fact, bring the paper copy of your immunization record with you. Do NOT pack it in your suitcase; it will need to be turned in as soon as we arrive. If you do not have your immunization record when we arrive at Saranac, you will be sent to the camp office to call home and have it faxed to the camp before you can participate in any activities. (If your name is crossed out, that means you sent us a copy of your immunjization record, and we will bring that copy to Saranac.)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I BRING?
This depends on whether or not you have a credit card. If you do NOT have a credit card, we suggest you bring about $70 to $90 in cash. You'll need money for breakfast and lunch on the way to Saranac plus money for dinner on the way home from Saranac. Those three meals may cost you about $30. Plus you should also bring money for the camp store (where you can buy shirts, hoodies, and other camp gear) and the snack bar at Saranac (drinks, smoothies, food). About $40 to $60 should be sufficient for the camp store and snack bar.

But if you have a MasterCard or Visa credit card, you will be able to use that for your three meals on the way to and home from Saranac. Plus the camp store and snack bar at Saranac also accept MasterCard and Visa.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE WE MEETING?
We will meet on Sunday morning, July 28, at 6:30 AM at East Bergen Christian Church320 Beverly Rd, Teaneck, NJ 07666. See "Departure Information" above.

DO I NEED A SLEEPING BAG?
No, Saranac will provide you with all sleeping supplies like a pillow, bed sheets, and a blanket (just like at the Winter Getaway). Feel free to bring a small pillow for the bus ride along with a small blanket because the bus can get cold, but you will not need these things at Saranac itself.

WHEN WILL WE GET HOME?
On Saturday night, August 3. We won't know the exact time, so students will be instructed to call home to let parents know approximately what time the bus will return. We anticipate around 8:30 PM, but that can depend on weather, traffic, etc. See "Return Information" above.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER?
Saranac is located in the Adirondack Mountains at 1,545 feet above sea level. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. It does rain frequently at Saranac, but it typically lasts for only an hour or so and then changes right away to sunny, beautiful weather (and vice-versa). Please note that nighttime temperatures can drop considerably and be quite chilly. We strongly urge you to bring a hoodie or other warm clothing for those cold nights and rainy days. A water resistant jacket may be helpful as well. See "Packing List" above.

DO I REALLY NEED TO BRING TWO PAIRS OF SNEAKERS? WHY?
Yes, you need to bring TWO pairs of sneakers. We will be doing some activities in which your sneakers will get REALLY DIRTY. You will probably want to get rid of those sneakers afterwards. We suggest you bring an OLD CHEAP pair that you don't mind if they get dirty and that you don't mind if you never wear again. Obviously, you should also bring some old clothes that match this description as well, like an old shirt and old shorts. The OTHER pair of sneakers is for "normal" activities, like playing basketball. See "Packing List" above for details on what to bring.

IS THERE A PLACE TO DO LAUNDRY?
Unfortunately, no. Most people just hang their swimsuits and damp clothes on balcony railings to let them dry.

IF I'M NOT ALLOWED TO USE MY CELL PHONE, HOW CAN MY PARENTS CONTACT ME?
Your parents should call the camp office at (518) 891-3010 and speak with the receptionist to leave a message. Likewise, if you want to call your parents or anyone else, there are free telephones at camp you may use for outgoing calls only.

ARE CAMERAS ALLOWED?
Yes, definitely! Please bring a camera and take lots of pictures. We would love for you to share your pictures with our photographer Gerald Juan when the week is done. Remember to bring your camera charger and memory card too. But do NOT plan on using your cell phone as a camera since you have to turn your cell phone in when we arrive at Saranac.

HOW WILL I SURVIVE WITHOUT MY CELL PHONE?
You'll be fine. It's actually quite liberating to go a week without depending on technology so much. Enjoy the freedom! Remind your friends at home that you won't have access to your phone so they don't get too mad when you don't reply. (Make sure you tell your parents too!)

HOW "RELIGIOUS" IS SARANAC?
Every night at Saranac we will have "club," very similar to the AYL club we have four times a year at EBCC in Teaneck. At these club meetings, the camp speaker will give a brief message about some aspect of the Christian faith. The rest of your day at Saranac will consist of free time and various all-camp activities. If you attended the Winter Getaway in February with AYL, the format will be very similar. Please know that although Asian Young Life is a Christian organization, we strive to respect people from all religious and non-religious backgrounds, and we never try to impose our beliefs on anyone. No matter what you believe, you will feel loved and accepted at Saranac and in AYL.

WHAT ABOUT SAFETY?
Be assured that your safety is our top priority. Male and female housing is clearly defined, separated, and chaperoned by local adult teachers/leaders who already know you and who will "go through" camp with you, serving as your cabin leaders and overseeing and experiencing the same activities you do. Furthermore, there is a property staff of over 40 additional adult workers, including a fully-licensed medical doctor and an EMT, who live on the camp premises and are available 24 hours a day in case of any emergency. The doctor and the EMT also have access to a fully-stocked medical infirmary that can handle most problemsThe overall ratio of adult supervision to teenagers is about 1:7. All waterfront activities are supervised by certified lifeguards, and you must wear a life vest and be with an adult leader at all times when doing any waterfront activities like canoeing, kayaking, or sailing. We care about you! And we want the best week of your life to be safe!

WILL THERE BE A REUNION?
Yes, we will be having our Saranac Reunion on Thursday, August 8, from 5 PM to 9:30 PM at 19 Tamarack Rd in Alpine, NJ. If you attended Saranac with AYL during the summer of 2019, then please join us! You'll have a chance to reconnect with your friends from camp. Pizza will be provided, so bring your appetite. Bring a towel and swimsuit, too, because you can go swimming as well!
